Regular brushing and flossing can do a lot to prevent tooth decay and periodontal disease, but sometimes are not enough to completely prevent harmful oral conditions. Biannual dental cleanings are also necessary in order to get rid of more stubborn plaque and tartar from the surface of the tooth and other hard to reach places such as between the gums. Without using preventative measures regularly can lead to periodontal disease. Here at our Ocean dental office, Laura Branigan, DMD can provide anyone with beginning signs of periodontal disease with a periodontal deep cleaning to prevent the condition from getting any worse.
Laura Branigan, DMD is here at our Ocean dental office to make sure every patient gets the comprehensive dental care they deserve. After an initial consultation with Dr. Branigan, she will determine if any further procedures are necessary in order to ensure your dental health is the best it can be. Periodontal deep cleanings include two methods of removing plaque and tartar. These two procedures are called scaling and root planing. Scaling is when tartar is scraped from above and below the gum line. If tartar sits along and below the gumline, pockets form and bacteria eat away at the soft tissues and results in the progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth. The root planing portion of the procedure cleans the bacteria from the root of the tooth that are otherwise difficult to get rid of, especially with an everyday toothbrush. Depending on the severity of the condition, lasers can also be used to ensure as complete removal of plaque and tartar as possible.
Your initial consultation and examination with Dr. Branigan will determine any subsequent treatment. If pockets do not heal completely or fully after a periodontal deep cleaning, then periodontal surgery may be needed in order to reduce the pocket size and further lessen damage and decay. No matter what your oral health baseline is, Dr. Laura Branigan, DMD will discuss oral hygiene methods and routines that will best suit your lifestyle and your medical need. Keeping a healthy smile is important. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Branigan at our Ocean dental office today to receive the proper dental care you need and deserve.
